VIRVUM Switzerland Progressive Death Metal

Illuminance is a journey that I hope every extreme metal fan embarks on to listen to and experience. From mesmerizing clean, orchestral sections to smashing, heavy interludes, Virvum demonstrates what it means to push the limits of great song-writing, musicianship, and to be a human trying to express oneself. With a taste and complexity that seems to come from other worlds, they put into melody and rhythm what I think of as that bridge between what we can and cannot understand about our universe. Space's power and peacefulness bind together to give birth to a musical creation that we know and (hopefully) love as Illuminance. Buy this without hesitation.

CIANIDE United States Death/Doom Metal

Apart from it just kicking ass aplenty, a big part of why I find this album so enjoyable is that it's hard for me to listen to it without comparing it to the aforementioned Monotheist. The similarity in guitar tone and overall production, paired with Cianide's clear musical debt to Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, makes this something of a companion album to that grand but ultimately disappointing experiment, one with a much less ambitious goal but one which it accomplishes with ferocious success. That the band was so perfectly able to answer that "what if" scenario I painted at the beginning of this review speaks not only to their abilities as musicians but also right to my amygdala or whatever part of your brain that makes you just want to listen to smash-everything riffs and wake up sore and happy the next day. So if, like me, you've listened to Monotheist a whole bunch of times and fairly often you were left wondering "yeah ok, but why aren't there more and better RIFFS?" then I can't really recommend this album enough.

KILLING ADDICTION United States Death Metal

The production on this release really stands out and brings all of the elements together to a precise point of metallic bliss that could definitely stand the test of time against bands like Sinister, Malevolent Creation, Jungle Rot, Grave, Deicide, Vital Remains, and other bands such as these. It seems as if Killing Addiction draw on a lot of influences and vibes from these bands throughout the duration of these 4 tracks.

XIBALBA Hardcore Death Metal US

Taking their name from Mayan mythology, Xibalba's sound doesn't entirely reflect the mystic, ancient atmosphere that their moniker represents. Instead, they have a more hands-on approach to their brand of death-influenced hardcore which reminds one of the more extreme side of Biohazard (only with far more substance). The result is pleasing to say the least: a brutal, in your face attitude, with enough sense of restraint to allow certain moments of stillness to breathe (the interlude, "Pausa" is beautifully positioned).

AYDRA Technical Death Metal Italy

It presented capably executed technical/progressive death metal to which Italy wasn’t such a stranger at the time with Sadist already on a full operational scale, with some talented novices (Gory Blister, Infernal Poetry, Algophobia, Illogicist) ready to spring up if given a chance.
